New ACOG Guidelines

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recently updated its practice guidelines on the role of the obstetrician/gynecologist in diagnosing ovarian cancer. The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Ohio in conjunction with our national partner, the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, applauds the new guidelines which reflect the latest scientific evidence on screening, symptoms and surgical staging. The ACOG guidelines state that ovarian cancer DOES have symptoms, and recommends that initial surgery be performed by a gynecological oncologist.

Obstetrician/gynecologists are frontline doctors, many with ovarian cancer see a gynecologist before being referred to a gynecologic oncologist for surgery and treatment. Given that ACOG represents 52,000 obstetrician/gynecologists across the United States, we are pleased to see this updated committee opinion on ovarian cancer. The OCAO and the Alliance hope that women's healthcare providers will recognize the signs, symptoms and risks of ovarian cancer, and appropriately refer patients to see specialists.

Faces of Ovarian Cancer

The Faces of Ovarian Cancer is an ongoing project within the OCAO designed to raise public awareness and put a face on the disease.

By conducting interviews with survivors, their family members and the medical teams who care for these women, we hope to not only promote awareness, but to also show that while every woman is at risk, a diagnosis has a ripple effect impacting the surrounding community. Our survivors are the Faces of Ovarian Cancer, their spouses and partners are the Faces of Ovarian Cancer, their children are the Faces of Ovarian Cancer and so are their doctors and nurses.

If you would like to participate in this project, please contact Amanda Miller at amiller@ocao.org or cal 614-546-9498.
